Winter Cabins and Winter Sports Go Together in Western North Carolina

If you’re looking for winter cabins in western North Carolina, there’s a good change you’ll be interested in the area’s options for skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and ice-skating.

From the city of Asheville, you’re within about a 30-minute drive of some winter sports resorts, and within 90 minutes of some of the highest slopes east of the Mississippi River, some with elevations over 5,500 feet.

Three winter sports destinations are less than an hour’s drive from Asheville and close to many of the winter cabins available for vacation rental.

If you’re looking to ski or snowboard, try the Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley (800-768-0285) or the Wolf Ridge Ski Resort in Mars Hill (800-817-4111). Wolf Ridge also offers snowtubing, as does Tube World in Maggie Valley (800-768-0285).

Within two hours of Asheville, you’ll find a variety of great winter sports options.

For skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and ice-skating, check out Ski Beech in Beech Mountain (800-438-2093). Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock (800-322-2373) offers skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating. And for skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing, Sapphire Valley Ski Resort in Sapphire (828-743-7663) and Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk (800-784-2768) are great spots.

Two attractions specialize in snowtubing only – the Hawksnest Winter Resort in Seven Devils (800-822-4295) and the Scaly Mountain Snowtubing Area in Scaly Mountain (828-526-3737).

Some of the highest mountain peaks and slopes in western North Carolina, close to the area’s winter cabins and other lodging, average nearly 50 inches of snowfall each season. Winter resorts use snowmaking equipment to compensate for when Mother Nature comes up short.

Yet travel in western North Carolina is relatively easy during the winter months. It stays cold enough and snows frequently enough to keep the winter resorts going, but lower elevations in the Asheville area stay snow free for much of the winter.
